Cocoa

Chocolate is a worldwide favourite snack, gift, and treat, but it's no blessing for the many labourers in developing countries who pick the cocoa pods to create the chocolate we regularly enjoy. Much of the world's chocolate comes from West Africa, where cocoa production plays an enormous role in the economy of the continent. In Ghana, up to 40% of the export revenues are available through the sale of cocoa. Sadly, usually very little of the profit in the harvesting of cocoa is seen by the workers in the fields, but Fairtrade chocolate is changing this fact.

Fairtrade organisations offer cocoa farmers the chance to make the living they deserve, as the Fairtrade certification demands workers are paid a minimum price. Purchasing fairtrade cocoa guarantees that farmers are looked after and that no forced or child labour was used in the creation of their products.
