Q: Hi
we have bought a ceramic bee nester and it was filled with cotton wool, should this stay in or come out?
we aim to give it as a present, so instructions would be helpful.
Many thanks
Andee Neumann
A: Hi there,
The cotton wool type substance is not actually cotton wool, it is a substance called Kapok. Kapok is a natural poduct that the bees use to nest in (cotton wool gets stuck on the wings of the bees, so isn't suitable). Bees are naturally messy creatures, so after they have nested for a year, you will need to clear out the nesting bowl and replace most of the kapok, leaving some of the previous kapok as this contains a smell that the bees will recognise.
I hope this is helpful. Robyn.
