In the USA alone there are an estimated 25 billion 'disposable' coffee cups thrown away each year. The fact that, due to health regulations, the vast majority (90%+) of the paper in these cups is brand new virgin paper does not help matters. You might think, then, that the cups themselves could be recycled, right? Wrong! During manufacturing the cups are laminated with a plastic resin (polyethylene) in order to insulate and seal the cups. This prevents recycling, and ensures that every single laminated paper cup ends up in landfill and begins to decompose. As it does, it releases methane, a greenhouse gas with 23 times the heat trapping power of carbon dioxide.
So, do your bit. Grab yourself a new mug, and make a stand against wasteful paper cups.

This is a great alternative which will save waste and even save you money - one particular coffee store will actually knock 25p off your coffee if you use your own cup. The body is ceramic so it keeps your drink warm and doesn't need a cardboard cuff to stop your hand burning; the lid is made from some kind of flexible rubbery substance. The lid can get a little bit stained after a lot of coffees. But that's no reason not to buy it!
