New from Freeplay comes the Companion Wind-up Radio, which does much more than it's name suggests, packing as it does a radio, torch and mobile phone charger into the compact 4.9" casing.

As well as featuring a hand crank for charging, the Companion can also be charged using the integrated solar charger. The radio will play uninterrupted in direct sunlight, making it an essential addition to any festival kit bag.

With a rubberised body and recessed controls, the Freeplay Companion is built for durability, even in testing conditions.

The radio comes with a charging cable for the new style Nokia charger.

To achieve maximum battery efficiency, Freeplay recommend an initial conditioning charge. Full charge can be achieved with a 10 hour AC charge via the mini USB port.

Please Note: The Companion Radio can be charged via a mini USB lead from your computer, or with any other mini-USB universal charger. Freeplay does not include a charging adaptor with the majority of its products in order to minimise the environmental impact of producing unneccessary charging devices when many people already own a suitable adaptor.

However if you are in need of a charger, Freeplay's versatile and internationally compatible Eco-Charge Mini-USB AC adaptor is perfect for the job.

This is a great wee radio ready for travelling and any emergencies.

Make sure you check out your chargers. I got a bit confused as I didn't realize there are mini AND micro USB ports (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universal_Serial_Bus#Physical_appearance). The radio needs a mini usb if you are charging from the mains or a PC. The charger for your mobile phone supplied with this radio is a 2mm Nokia charger.

My Nokia N97 has a micro usb charging port, with corresponing micro usb charger, so I thought I was stuck.

However digging out the box the phone came in turned up a 2mm to micro usb adapter. I found an old apple usb to mini usb so I can charge the radio from my PC initially. These sorts of adapters can be found on the internet quite easily once you have got the hang of micro versus mini usb.

I know I am sad, but I really enjoyed winding up my mobile phone for the first time!
