Fashion Revolution Week 2022 – Money Fashion Power 18th – 24th April

Fashion Revolution Week (FRW) happens every year in the week of the 24th April. The 24th April is the date of the Rana Plaza collapse in 2013; one of the biggest industrial disasters in history.

The Rana Plaza was a building in Bangladesh which housed some major garment factories for some of the biggest fashion brands. It employed around 5000 people and more than 1100 people died when the factory collapsed and an additional 2500 people were injured. Many of the victims were young women.

Every year FRW has a different theme to highlight how problematic and damaging the fast fashion industry is. The theme for this 2022’s Fashion Revolution Week is MONEY FASHION POWER.

What is Closed Loop Recycling?

You may have heard the term ‘closed loop recycling’ but do you know what it really means? Well let’s take a look and you may be surprised that you may have already recycled in a closed loop system!

First let’s look at open loop recycling, this is what you will probably imagine when you think of recycling, it’s what you do when you take your recycling out to be picked up by the council. If you do this regularly and check packaging to see if it is recyclable you will probably know how problematic this could be, are all the items you see in the recycle bins actually recyclable and one council may accept certain items where others do not based on the local recycling capabilities. With an open loop system a product is recycled into a different product, for example a plastic drinks bottle may be recycled into shoes, sleeping bags or jackets.

World Environment Day

With World Environment Day approaching we thought this would be a great opportunity to look into the history of the day and what it means to us and our planet.

The UN General assembly designated 5th June as World Environment day back in 1972, which marked the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. It wasn’t until 1974 that World Environment day was celebrated for the first time with the slogan “Only One Earth”.

It is a day for environmental action, with the intention of prompting governments, businesses and citizens to focus on pressing environmental issues. Every year has a different theme and is hosted by a different country. This year the theme is ‘Time for Nature’ and it is hosted by Colombia in partnership with Germany.
