Zao makeup is owned by Cosm’Eika France and was co-founded in 2012 by four friends, David Reccole, Phillipe Donnat, Yvan Rouvier and Salima Macozzi Reccole. All four friends love nature and are passionate and conscious of the impact of consumption on the environment.
This is where the idea of Zao came from. The brand was created to align with the strong values of its owners where there was a passion for creating the first rechargeable makeup brand. It was important that the products were 100% natural and because of this they were also certified organic by Ecocert.
Through travelling to countries such as India, Vietnam and China along with the natural makeup products the idea was born to create makeup in bamboo packaging. Bamboo’s exceptional growth rate makes it a leader in carbon capture during its life cycle. Due to this, all Zao products are able to display a reduced carbon footprint.
The bamboo is not just used in the packing of Zao’s products it is also incorporated into the formulas themselves in the form of sap powder, leaf hydrosol or bamboo rhizome macerate.
The bamboo used for Zao’s packaging has also formed a refill range of products in which only one form of packaging needs to be purchased and then refills can be purchased to swap out when you choose to do so. This innovative idea is helping to reduce a lot of the plastic waste that is produced from cosmetic products along with the sustainable bamboo which is used.
Zao’s makeup is as high-quality and as pigmented as conventional makeup brands and yet is produced in a much more sustainable and ethical way. Additionally, all their products are vegan and cruelty free. Its cosmetics are rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that all mean they are soothing, safe and gentle on your skin.
