Introducing Asquith London

History of Asquith

Asquith has been producing ethically made eco activewear for yoga, Pilates, sports and living in for 20 years, opening in 2002. When Asquith launched in 2002 activewear was mostly(and still is) made from chemical-laden fabrics, synthetic fabrics. The aim was to create something different, by using natural breathable eco-friendly fabrics to create pieces that kept you feeling secure on your mat, and would also love wearing everywhere for years to come. Everything they do is multifunctional so you can enjoy them as long and as much as possible.

Asquith was founded by Alice Asquith combining her love for fabrics and design with her love for yoga and Pilates. Alice came from a long line of creative women, her mother, grandmother and great grandmother who all designed and made their own beautiful clothes so it was only natural she’d be following in their footsteps!

What fabrics do Asquith use?

From the start Alice wanted to make elegant, naturally breathable activewear in a way that benefited people and minimised the impact on the environment. Asquith uses exceptional eco fabrics; bamboo, organic cotton and Bambor® which are at the heart of their commitment to protecting the planet.  Using natural fabric means not using synthetic fabrics that are made of lycra and nylon come from fossil fuels using high-temperature extraction processes.

Bambor®

Asquith trademarked Bambor® in 2015 after extensive testing and research. Bambor® is a unique blend of bamboo, organic cotton and a small amount of Elasthane (for stretchability). Bambor® is extra soft, breathable and durable enabling it to mould to the shape of your body for flexibility and comfort. All cotton used in Bambor® is grown, knitted and dyed in Turkey and is GOTS certified – ethically grown, chemical free and responsibly produced.

Organic Cotton

Cotton crops cover 2.4% ohttps://www.naturalcollection.com/shop/asquith/f the world’s cultivated land but use 6% of the world’s pesticides, more than any other single crop. Removing these pesticides reduces not only water pollution but also water usage. It increases bio-diversity, it’s better for the soil and the health of cotton growing communities as well.

Bamboo Viscose

Bamboo grows faster and absorbs more carbon dio-oxide than hardwood trees and needs no chemical fertiliser, pesticides and much, much less water to grow and thrive. This makes bamboo a sustainable and environmentally friendly low-impact fabric.

Bamboo is perfect for activewear as it is naturally breathable, sweat wicking and extremely resilient and durable. In addition to this it feels soft on your skin making it very comfortable to wear.

Asquith’s fabric is Oeko-Tex certified which means it is processed without the use of harmful chemicals in the dyeing and finishing making it great for sensitive skin. The bamboo is grown in a sustainably managed forest and then processed into fibres in China. Bales of fibre are transported by sea to Turkey where they are spun into yarn, knitted into clothes then dyed. All dyes complete with GOTS and Oeko-Tex standards!

Tencel

Asquith’s Tencel is made from sustainable wood sources, primarily beech wood which is all harvested from sustainable managed forests. Naturally breathable, the modal fibres are lightweight, smooth and soft feeling, giving exquisite comfort for even the most sensitive skin.

How are they made?

Asquith collections are made in lovely GOTS certified factories in sunny southern Turkey and India, meaning they have been approved by the Global Organic Textile Standard which is the worlds leading textile processing standard for organic fibres. The factories pass the Sedex Members Ethical Trade Audit which covers social standards, environmental conditions, business ethics and adherence of health & safety procedures. Asquith clothes are made with care and passion, they are the opposite of fast fashion. They are made to be durable and long lasting at the same time as being purposefully classic and multi-functional.

Style

At the heart of sustainability is getting the most wear from fewer, better quality clothing. This is why Asquith designs are always made to be versatile, functional and timeless so they work effortlessly with the rest of your everyday wardrobe as well as of course for your Pilates or yoga practice.
