Eczema awareness week

Created by the National Eczema Society, Eczema Awareness Week runs September 15th-22nd and seeks to improve public knowledge of this commonly misunderstood condition. It’s a week of various special events – seminars, fundraisers, Q&As, etc – encouraging people to learn more, share their experiences and spread the word.

What is eczema?

Eczema, also known as dermatitis, is a chronic condition that renders the skin red, dry and itchy. Roughly 1 in 5 children suffer from eczema – the condition often improves as the subject get older, but about 1 in 10 adults continue to experience it throughout their lives. It also has close links to other conditions like asthma and hay fever.

Eczema varies in severity – though rarely dangerous, it can increase the risk of severe skin infections like cellulitis. In addition, it can have a serious impact on quality of life. Disturbed sleep is a particular common effect, leading to daytime fatigue. Self-consciousness and low self-esteem are also frequently reported among eczema sufferers.

MooGoo skincare

Various medical treatments are available for eczema, including steroid creams – but those seeking a milder, more natural alternative may find what they’re looking for in MooGoo’s skincare range.

  • Sensitive Skin Balm is specially formulated for people with eczema or psoriasis. Lightweight and gentle, it’s rich in natural oils and soothing ingredients like aloe vera.
  • Milk Wash is pH-balanced and free from SLS, meaning it can cleanse the skin without causing unnecessary drying or irritation.
  • Soothing MSM Moisturiser is light, hypoallergenic and full of natural oils, making it ideal for sensitive skin.

Don’t forget to spread a little kindness and support this Eczema Awareness Week – and if you’re one of the millions of people in the UK who experience the condition, maybe there’s something here that can help you.

Let’s celebrate Organic September

Happy Organic September! Every year, the Soil Association leads a month-long campaign celebrating organic practices. Whether you’re doing it for the planet, for animal welfare or just for your own wellbeing, there’s never been a better time to get involved.

What does organic really mean?

There’s no single element that defines organic farming – rather, it’s a whole system of principles and methods. Many people believe it means using no pesticides whatsoever, but that isn’t quite true.

The use of toxic chemical pesticides is prohibited, along with the likes of growth hormones and GMOs. But certain natural alternatives, like spearmint oil or citronella, are permitted under certain circumstances.

Typically, organic farmers will use compost or manure as a natural fertiliser, along with methods like crop rotation.

What are the benefits?

Food that’s been produced organically is generally thought to be healthier and tastier than non-organic, but the benefits run a lot deeper than that. Organic farming results in healthier soil, greater biodiversity, and better conditions for farm animals.

Pollinators particularly thrive on organic land. The declining bee population is one of the most serious issues we currently face as a species, with pesticides and herbicides being a leading cause – organic farming is helping to fight it.

Organic beauty

Beauty products are one area where organic ingredients are especially important. In addition to environmental concerns, it’s natural to be wary about what you’re applying to your skin, and beauty products often come with a long, daunting list of mysterious ingredients.

Organic ingredients are typically more recognisable, and they also tend to be safer for people with allergies. It’s no wonder that people are being drawn to organic cosmetics in greater and greater numbers.
