Created by the National Eczema Society, Eczema Awareness Week runs September 15th-22nd and seeks to improve public knowledge of this commonly misunderstood condition. It’s a week of various special events – seminars, fundraisers, Q&As, etc – encouraging people to learn more, share their experiences and spread the word.
What is eczema?
Eczema, also known as dermatitis, is a chronic condition that renders the skin red, dry and itchy. Roughly 1 in 5 children suffer from eczema – the condition often improves as the subject get older, but about 1 in 10 adults continue to experience it throughout their lives. It also has close links to other conditions like asthma and hay fever.
Eczema varies in severity – though rarely dangerous, it can increase the risk of severe skin infections like cellulitis. In addition, it can have a serious impact on quality of life. Disturbed sleep is a particular common effect, leading to daytime fatigue. Self-consciousness and low self-esteem are also frequently reported among eczema sufferers.
