The reason for the recall is owing to the presence of tropane alkaloids:
‘This substance is naturally present in a weed that grows on organic corn fields and is released when the seeds of this weed break. When harvesting the organic corn, some of the seeds of this weed ended up in the corn flour that was used for our organic tortilla chips.’ – DO-IT Organic

The recall is made due to the presence of atropine and scopolamine in the product. This is a precautionary measure. The product complies with current EU legislation, but if consumption of the product exceeds moderate levels the daily reference dose of atropine and scopolamine can be exceeded.

What effects can excessive consumption of atropine and scopolamine cause?
There are no long-term health risks. According to European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) atropine and scopolamine might cause the following temporary symptoms: nausea, dizziness and headaches, if the levels exceed daily reference dose (0.016 micrograms / kg bodyweight).

How did atropine and scopolamine end up in our products?
Atropine and scopolamine are organic compounds naturally occurring in plants that can be detected in corn fields. Atropine and scopolamine can be found in all products containing organic corn flour, for example chips and tortillas.
The elevated atropine and scopolamine levels have been identified only in organic corn. Also conventional corn has been tested in 2021 and 2022 and no levels of atropine and scopolamine has been found.
We are not aware of problems related to atropine and scopolamine previously. Our organic corn supplier has tested the raw material 2 times / year and the results obtained have been below 5 ppb. (parts per billion)
